THE CHALLENGE
Serve as the full-service video production team for the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, the largest political convention of the cycle. The scope demanded comprehensive documentary coverage across a five-day convention, nightly social media highlight reels on an overnight turnaround, pre-event hype content, animated speaker announcement videos, and commercial break packages for the livestream, all while managing five continuous camera setups and coordinating with photography teams for targeted speaker coverage. The assignment took on an additional layer of complexity when the event opened just days after the assassination attempt on President Trump, dramatically tightening security protocols and restricting backstage access for production crews.
THE APPROACH
Led the operation as Director and Executive Producer, overseeing the entire video capture effort directly for the host committee. Built a pre-production foundation across multiple advance trips to Milwaukee in the months leading up to the convention, positions, planning camera placements, and establishing workflows for the volume ahead. On-site, managed a team including two dedicated editors working near-continuously to maintain the pace of deliverables. Ran five cameras simultaneously plus time-lapse rigs, capturing roughly six hours of footage per day across the convention floor, backstage areas, and speaker staging.
When heightened security after the assassination attempt restricted crew access to backstage areas, adapted the production plan on the fly, repositioning camera setups, adjusting coverage strategies, and finding new angles to maintain the quality and depth of the documentary capture without missing critical moments. Delivered nightly highlight reels edited overnight and deployed to social media the following morning, with the same content integrated into the next day’s livestream. Simultaneously produced speaker announcement videos and hype content for social channels, plus commercial break packages cut for the livestream production team each evening. The result was a surgically organized archive of the entire convention: 5 terabytes of footage cataloged for future advertising, event promos, and campaign use - alongside 40+ deliverables across social, broadcast, and livestream formats.
